Leaving Pai? Nice Try. Your Guide to Visa Extensions in Pai
Not ready to leave Pai? A local guide to visa extensions, TM7 and TM30 paperwork, hotel registration, office hours, overstay fines and passport collection.

Research reviewed: 23 October 2026.
Want to stay longer in Pai? Eligible visitors can apply for an extension of stay at Pai Immigration. Before you go, check your passport’s permitted-stay date, speak to your hotel about your TM30 accommodation record, and confirm the current passport-signing and collection arrangements. The standard tourist extension application fee is ฿1,900; approval and the length granted depend on your circumstances.
Imagine arriving in Pai with an excellent plan: two nights, a sunset, perhaps a waterfall, then onward to somewhere you have responsibly highlighted on a map.
By the third morning, you have a favourite breakfast, a new friend who also leaves “tomorrow,” and laundry hanging outside your room. Your backpack has been unpacked. This is how they get you.
By day five, your itinerary has become a suggestion box.
Staying a little longer can be a lovely decision. It just needs one small contribution from the organised version of you: checking how long you are actually allowed to stay in Thailand.
Your hammock does not send calendar reminders.
The “I was only staying two nights” story has witnesses
This is a familiar travel feeling, with some actual accounts behind it. In a 2014 essay on This Battered Suitcase, Brenna Holeman described planning a few days in Pai and staying more than two weeks. She became so familiar with the restaurants that staff knew her order.
That is a perfectly respectable travel milestone. Your original itinerary may disagree.
The writers of Meet Us on the Road, in an article updated in July 2025, described a short first visit during the Mae Hong Son loop, followed by a return visit that brought their total time in Pai to ten days.
Sometimes the next destination is, apparently, Pai again.
These are individual travel stories, not promises about how long anyone can legally stay. But if your two-night booking has started growing extra nights, you have company.
First, check the stamp: are you eligible for an extension?
People often call this “renewing your visa.” For the short holiday extension covered here, the useful phrase is extension of stay. Start with the date immigration gave you permission to stay until, rather than a visa’s separate validity or entry deadline.
Eligible tourist-visa holders and eligible visitors admitted under a visa-exemption scheme may be able to request up to 30 additional days. The Royal Thai Embassy in London explains visa-exempt extensions and distinguishes visa on arrival; the Royal Thai Embassy in Kuala Lumpur explains tourist-visa stays and possible extensions.
Visa exemption and visa on arrival are different categories. Do not assume this extension route applies just because you received a stamp at the airport. Nationality, entry category, previous extensions and current rules matter, and approval rests with immigration.
There have also been recent changes: the Thai Embassy’s September 2026 announcement describes a revised visa-exemption scheme effective from 15 September. An older blog saying that everybody gets 60 days is not a reliable way to calculate your deadline. Check your own stamp and ask immigration about your entry.
Start making arrangements several working days before that deadline, with room for missing paperwork, holidays or a return visit. Ask Pai Immigration how early it will accept your particular application.
Why we recommend Pai’s smaller immigration office
If you are already staying in Pai and the local office can handle your application, our recommendation is to do your extension here. After three years living here, we have found the smaller Pai office generally has much shorter queues than the busy Chiang Mai offices.
In our experience, a Chiang Mai immigration visit can take five or six hours, with substantial queues. Waiting times at either location vary; this is our local experience, not a measured average or an official minimum.
If you are already staying in Pai, checking the local service also avoids planning a separate journey back to Chiang Mai just for this task.
There are encouraging historical accounts: a February 2024 traveler reported completing an extension in Pai in around 30 minutes on a Friday. That is one person’s experience at the time, not a current turnaround guarantee.
Confirm that Pai Immigration can process your particular application using your current accommodation details, arrive prepared and check collection timing. A shorter queue does not necessarily mean same-day passport collection: see our Thursday/Friday advice below. We would love to promise you will be back in time for your second breakfast, but breakfast deserves more certainty than that.
Where is Pai Immigration, and when is it open?
Make sure you select the Pai branch, rather than the main office in Mae Hong Son town.
| Detail | What to use |
|---|---|
| Office | Mae Hong Son Immigration, Pai branch / Pai Immigration Service Department |
| Official postal address | 121 Moo 1, Wiang Tai, Pai District, Mae Hong Son 58130 |
| Map listing | Chai Songkhram Road, Wiang Tai; plus code 9C6Q+MH6 |
| Pai office telephone | 053 699 229; from an overseas number, +66 53 699 229 |
| Listed weekday hours | Monday–Friday, 08:30–12:00 and 13:00–16:30, subject to holidays and local service arrangements |
The address comes from the official Mae Hong Son Immigration directory and the telephone from its official contact page. Use the Pai Immigration map listing and listed hours for navigation. The hours are a map listing, not a guarantee that applications are accepted until closing; confirm the current submission cutoff and holiday closures by phone. The Pai office is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
Before leaving the hotel: have the TM30 conversation
Ask reception:
“I’m going to immigration for an extension. Has my TM30 accommodation notification been submitted, and can I have a printed confirmation for my current stay?”
TM30 is the accommodation notification. TM7 is your extension application. They do different jobs. The host or hotel manager generally handles the accommodation report; the Immigration Bureau’s residence-notification handbook explains the reporting responsibility and the requirement to notify within 24 hours of taking residence.
Here is a small detail from our own experience: heading straight from hotel check-in to immigration can be a little too quick for the record to appear. Allow a little breathing room, perhaps an hour or two, and ask staff for confirmation. That is practical local experience, not a guaranteed system-update time or a reason to delay a required report.
We have personally arrived at immigration after checking in and found that staff could not yet see the accommodation record. Immigration handed us a paper for the hotel staff to complete.
If that happens to you, follow the officer’s instructions, take the paper back to reception and have the hotel complete the requested details. Ask whether you need anything else before returning, and use the actual paper supplied by immigration rather than assuming a generic download will replace it.
It does not automatically mean your hotel has done something wrong. Check what has been submitted and what immigration needs to see.
In this case, a sensible pause between check-in and paperwork may save you a second trip. Pai has finally found an administrative use for taking things slowly.
What to bring for a tourist extension
Use this as a preparation checklist, then confirm any extra requirements for your entry with Pai Immigration:
- Your original passport.
- A completed TM7 application for extension of temporary stay. Ask for the version currently used by the office.
- Copies of the relevant passport pages: your identity page, latest arrival stamp, visa or e-visa details if applicable, and any existing extension relevant to your application. Sign copies as instructed.
- One recent 4 × 6 cm photograph, taken within the past six months.
- ฿1,900 for the application fee. Bring cash and extra for any copies or photographs you still need; those are separate costs.
- Printed confirmation of your current accommodation notification, plus the hotel’s full address and contact details.
- Your arrival documentation, as applicable. Keep your TDAC confirmation available, and bring a paper TM6 if one was issued to you.
- A pen and any additional documents requested for your circumstances.
The TM7, passport-copy, photograph and fee basics are listed in the tourism section of Lamphun Immigration’s official service guide. Pai Immigration may request additional documents for your particular entry. The official TDAC guidance explains that the digital arrival card replaces the traditional paper arrival card; it is not a visa or an extension application.
Immigration may also give you acknowledgement or information forms to complete. Read them and ask if anything is unclear. For a TM7, the office’s current packet is the safest starting point; older download links are not always maintained.
Use your actual address and explain your plans truthfully. “More time sightseeing in Pai” can be a straightforward reason if that is what you are doing. Your application does not need an essay about the emotional significance of your breakfast spot.
The Thursday/Friday passport detail worth knowing
From our repeated visits to Pai Immigration, applications can be submitted on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, but passports are generally kept until Thursday for sign-off. In our experience, the officer who signs off passports is usually available on Thursdays and Fridays.
That means an early-week application and an early-week departure may not fit together. If you need your passport for travel on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, arrange the extension in advance, ideally during the previous week, and confirm when you can collect it. Do not build a departure plan around getting it back on the day you apply.
This is a local observation from living here, not a published weekly guarantee. Call 053 699 229 and ask:
“Can my extension be completed on the day I visit? Will you keep my passport, and when can I collect it?”
Mention your travel date before handing over the passport. If the office retains it, ask what receipt or collection slip you will receive, how your permission to stay is documented while the application is being processed, and when to return. Keep the paperwork and follow the collection instructions.
Do not wait for Thursday or Friday if that would take you beyond your current permitted-stay date. Speak to immigration promptly about how to proceed. A preferred collection day does not change your deadline.
When the passport comes back, check the new permitted-stay date and any instructions before leaving.
Overstay fines: your passport does not run on Pai time
Check the permitted-stay date stamped in your passport, then check which day of the week it falls on. Put it in your phone with a reminder several working days earlier. “I thought it was next Tuesday” is an expensive calendar setting.
For a short overstay dealt with voluntarily, the usual fine is ฿500 per day, up to a maximum of ฿20,000. For example, three chargeable days would be ฿1,500. This is separate from the ฿1,900 extension application fee. The Royal Thai Embassy’s overstay guidance sets out the fine and warns about longer overstays.
Overstay is an immigration offence, and the consequences can go beyond a fine. Longer overstays can lead to deportation and re-entry bans; arrest and prosecution carry stricter consequences even for shorter overstays. The official overstay measures distinguish voluntary surrender from arrest: an overstay of more than 90 days and up to one year followed by voluntary surrender triggers a one-year re-entry ban, while arrest and prosecution for an overstay of less than a year carry a five-year ban. Longer periods carry longer bans under those rules.
Paying a fine does not buy extra holiday days or guarantee an extension. If your permission has already expired, contact immigration promptly about resolving it.
If your permitted-stay date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday, plan your immigration visit before the closure, with time for the passport-collection arrangements above. Do not assume that a closed office automatically moves your permitted-stay date to Monday. Ask immigration about your circumstances if you cannot apply beforehand.
The two dates to organise are when your permission to stay ends and when you need your passport back. Check both before arranging onward travel.
Stay longer, and be a good guest
Pai’s relaxed pace goes beautifully with a properly organised stay. The local immigration team has a job to do; bring accurate documents, give yourself time and treat staff courteously.
Mae Hong Son Immigration’s own public updates document enforcement involving overstay and unauthorised work in Pai. Keep your permission to stay valid and follow the conditions attached to it. If your plans involve working, performing or helping a business, check the required permission first rather than assuming a tourist extension covers it.
For a stay beyond the extension available to you, ask immigration or the appropriate Thai embassy about a visa suited to your actual plans. Loving Pai is an excellent reason to plan carefully.
Once the paperwork is sorted
Check your accommodation availability, adjust onward travel and put your new permitted-stay date somewhere more reliable than “I think it’s next month.”
Then get back to enjoying the place you meant to visit briefly. You might try a different sunset spot, spend some time beyond the hostel circuit, or ask us about a stay at Oasis.
You are welcome to change your itinerary. Just keep the passport dates firmly in the plan.
And if somebody asks when you are leaving, try giving them an actual date.
We realise this is a lot to ask in Pai.
